Brompton Ride & Hike to Mt. Tohnodake 1491m
In order to escape from terrible heatwave in summer, I tend to go anywhere well beyond 1000m in its elevation in the past weeks. Today's destination, Mt. Tohnodake, is located in Tanzawa Mountains and popular for its spectacular view with Mt. Fuji and other high mountains around it.

Old Brompton completed Mt. Fuji Hill Climb cycling race!
My old Brompton and I challenged the 20th Mt. Fuji Hill Climb cycling race, distance 24 km and total ascend 1,255m, on June 2, 2024. Despite rain forecast, blue sky came up and more than 9000 riders enjoyed this great race in dry condition.

Mt. Fuji capped with snow
A day in mid November, Brompton and I went to Tenka Chaya, a historic tavern in the mountain with a perfect view of Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji Hill Climb Race 2016
Why don't you come and join the Mt. Fuji Hill Climb Race to be held on June 12 (sun)?
Brompton and I will be a part of the race.
Riders go through the 25km distance and 1,255m elevation of the Fuji Subaru Skyline way heading for the 5th station of Mt. Fuji at an elevation of 2,305 meters.
A wonderful view from the hight of beyond 2,000 meters.

Mt. Fuji Hill Climb Race
Brompton and I were a part of the Mt. Fuji Hill Climb Race, one of the largest cycle events in which 8,500 cyclists participated. There were not only Japanese but also a lot of Taiwanese people and Belgian, English, Swiss and others.

Though it had rained since last night, the clouds started to go away.
About the time of my starting, already no rain.
Ready, set, ....
Go! The riders had to went through the 25km distance and 1,255m elevation of Fuji Subaru Skyline heading for the 5th station of Mt. Fuji at an elevation of 2,305 meters.
What sturdy people they are! I cannot beat them.
Because the number of participants reached more than 8000, there were quite variety of people.
This rider with this costume, Hatsune Miku, is very famous. He is very fast rider though he always rides a granny bike, not at all an expensive sport type one.
What! I saw this type of bike for the first time. It seems that his friend did not reach the goal but he did!

Goal!
When I changed at the goal place I met two pretty guys in costume. Right: Miku Hatsune and left: Ikamusume (a squid girl). Both are very popular characters amongst Japanese computer nerds.
After a while, riders who had arrived at the goal were divided into several groups. Each group was time by time instructed to down the hill as a group.
After a comfortable and thrilling downhill ride at high speed of average 38km/h, there was an udon bowl (Japanese noodle) treatment.
At the awarding ceremony, I was surprised that there were 31 participants who are older than 70 and reached the goal. Most of them are faster than me!
Why don't you come and join the Fuji Hill Climb Race next year?

Mount Fuji
Brompton and I climbed Mount Fuji to get to the fifth step where is a goal of the Mt. Fuji Hillclimb Race held on June 14 (Sunday). Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft).
Mt. Fuji Hillclimb Race is the largest and most popular hill climb race in which 8,500 cyclists are going to participate to run on the famous Fuji Subaru Line Highway with a distance of 24 km and total elevation of 1,255 meters. The participants start at the gate of Fuji Subaru Line Highway and head for the upper part of Mt. Fuji to end up at an elevation of 2,305 meters.

In a Today's training I decided to cut both of distance and elevation into a half of the race. I went to the third step of mt. Fuji by bus and started from the third step instead of the gate of the Fuji Subaru Line.

difference in elevation: 596 meters

A lot of riders also came here for training. They are supposed to run for the race.
Those beautiful ladies are also expected to join the race.
They must be participants!
Not a few riders have already reached the top and are going down the mountain at high speed. I still need some hundred meters to climb. I was gradually exhausted.
But what a fine day!
I am approaching to the goal. It is almost at 2250 meters in elevation here.
Because Mt. Fuji is a volcano, there are a lot of traces of land slides because volcanic rocks and soil are fragile.
Finally I arrived at the fifth step, the end of Fuji Subaru Highway. The elevation is about 2300 meters, two thirds of Mt. Fuji's total elevation. There are a lot of riders to take a rest after their hard runs.
Then, let's go down to have a lunch and take a bath at one of the secluded hot spring at the foot of mt. Fuji.
I arrived at Yoshinoike Onsen (a hot spring lodge) near Mount Fuji.
In the end of the day, relaxed and enjoyed in the hot spring!
